WBCS Exam Pattern:

The West Bengal Public Service Commission is responsible for conducting the West Bengal Civil Services examination popularly called the WBCS. The exam is conducted to recruit Group A, Group B, Group C and Group D officers for the West Bengal Provincial Civil Services. WBCS exam pattern will come to the aid of eligible candidates who aim to successfully pass the exam.

Date of start of registration of application: 5th November 2019

Last date to submit completed application: 26th November 2019

Date of the WBCS preliminary exam: 9th February 2020

Date of WBCS main exam: 27th and 28th June; and 4th and 5th July 2020

WBCS selection procedure:

The WBCS exam is conducted in 3 phases. These include the following:

  • Preliminary exam
  • Mains exam
  • Interview

WBCS exam pattern:

Preliminary exam:

  • The exam is a pen and paper based offline examination.
  • The exam consists of multiple choice objective questions or MCQ.
  • The candidate is provided with an OMR sheet to mark the answers.
  • The exam consists of 1 paper only based on general studies.
  • The total number of questions asked is 200. 
  • The total weightage of the exam is 200 marks.
  • The total duration of the exam is 2 hours or 120 minutes. 
  • The exam is qualifying in nature.

WBCS Mains exam:

  • The mains exam is a pen and paper-based offline exam.
  • The exam consists of both multiple choice objective questions (MCQ) and conventional descriptive questions.
  • The exam consists of 6 compulsory papers and 2 optional subject papers.
  • Paper 1 and 2 are conventional essay type papers and papers 3, 4 and 5 are objective type papers.
  • Paper 6 and 7 are optional papers chosen by the candidate as per the service.
  • The duration of the exam is 3 hours or 180 minutes each,
  • The weightage of each paper is 200 marks each.
