WBCS Exam Pattern Detail You Might Want to Know

WBCS Exam Pattern:

To keep the state machinery running smoothly an efficient administrative set up is mandatory. And to keep the administrative set up running in good condition, well-trained officers and staff is required. The West Bengal Public Service Commission is responsible for the recruitment of the West Bengal Civil Services (WBCS) examination. The WBCS exam pattern is modeled after the Indian Civil Services examination.

Date of start of registration of application: 5th November 2019

Last date to submit completed application: 25th November 2019

Date of preliminary exam: 9th February 2020

Eligibility criteria:

  • The candidate must possess a bachelor’s degree from a recognized university.
  • The candidate must be at least 21 years of age and must not exceed 32 years as on 1st January of the year of examination.
  • Age relaxation as per rules laid down by the state government of Bengal.
  • The candidate must be fluent in reading, writing and speaking Bengali.
  • The candidate must be a citizen of India.

WBCS exam pattern:

The West Bengal Civil Services exam is conducted in 3 stages. These include the following:

  • Preliminary exam
  • Mains exam
  • Personality test/ Interview

Preliminary exam

  • The prelims exam will be an offline pen and paper based exam.
  • The exam will consist of multiple choice objective questions.
  • The duration of the exam will be 2 ½ hours/ 150 minutes.
  • The exam will consist of 1 paper of General Studies.
  • Candidate will be given an OMR sheet to mark the correct answers.
  • The paper will consist of 8 sections which are as follows:
  • English Composition
  • General Science
  • Current events of National & International Importance
  • History of India
  • Geography of India with special reference to West Bengal
  • Indian Polity and Economy
  • Indian National Movement
  • General Mental Ability
  • The total number of questions asked is 200.
  • The total weightage of the marks is 200 marks.
  • The marking scheme is as follows:
  • Correct answer: +1 marks
  • There is no negative marking.

Main exam

  • The main exam is a pen and paper based offline examination.
  • The exam consists of descriptive and subjective questions.
  • The exam comprises of 6 compulsory papers and 2 optional subject papers.
  • The duration of the exam is 3 hours/ 180 minutes for each paper.
  • The weightage is 200 marks for each paper.
