UPSC Pre Exam Pattern:

The Union Public Service Commission is responsible for conducting the Civil Services Examination for the recruitment of grade 1 officers in the various branches of the government machinery. The UPSC exam as it is popularly referred to attracts numerous candidates from all walks of life. The UPSC exam comprises of 3 distinct stages which include preliminary exam, main exam and the personality test. The UPSC pre exam pattern will assist in the meticulous preparation of the exam.

Here are the details of the UPSC pre exam pattern:

The UPSC/ IAS exam consists of 3 stages which are as follows:

  • Preliminary exam
  • Main exam
  • Personal interview

Preliminary exam

  • The prelim exam is an offline pen and paper based exam.
  • The exam consists of multiple choice objective questions.
  • The preliminary exam is of qualifying nature.
  • When the candidate secures the qualifying cut off, he can appear for the main exam. Candidates have to secure at least 33% in the prelims to qualify for the main exam.  
  • The score of the prelim exam are not counted in the merit of the main selection procedure.
  • The preliminary exam consists of 2 compulsory papers. These include the following:
  • Paper 1: General Ability Test
  • Paper 2: Civil Services Aptitude Test
  • The medium of the exam is either Hindi/ English.
  • The ratio of the candidates selected for mains on the basis of the merit secured in the prelims is 13 times the total number of vacancies.
  • The total weightage of the preliminary exam is 400 marks.
  • The duration of the exam is 2 hours/ 120 minutes each.
  • Visually handicapped students are given an extra time of 20 minutes.
  • The marking scheme of the prelims is follows:
  • General studies: +2 marks for correct answer
  • Civil Service Aptitude test: +2.5 marks for correct answer
  • Incorrect answer: – 1/3rd marks will be deducted.
