UPSC CDS Exam Pattern:

The Combined Defense Services Examination or CDS as it is popularly referred to is held twice a year. The examination is conducted jointly by UPSC and Officers Training Academy (OTA). The CDS is a national level recruitment test for eligible candidates who are interested in serving in the 3 wings of the country’s defense forces, i.e., Indian Air Force, Indian Army, and Indian Navy. The UPSC CDS exam pattern is very useful for candidates preparing for the exam.

Here are the details of the UPSC CDS exam pattern:

 Eligibility criteria:

  • Educational qualification: This differs on the basis of post the candidate is applying for.
  • For Indian Military Academy (IMA), the candidate must possess a Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university.
  •  For Indian Naval Academy (INA), the candidate must possess a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology from a recognized university or equivalent.
  • For Air Force Academy, the candidate must possess a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology from a recognized university/ degree from a recognized university with Physics & Mathematics as compulsory subjects.
  • For Officers Training Academy (OTA), the candidate must possess a Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university/equivalent.
  • Age as on 1st January 2020
  • IMA: 19 years to 24 years
  • AFA: 19 years to 23 years
  • INA: 19 years to 23 years
  • OTA: 19 years to 25 years

UPSC CDS exam pattern:

  • The UPSC CDS exam is an offline paper and pen based exam.
  • The exam will comprise multiple choice questions.
  • The duration of the exam is 2 hours/ 120 minutes.
  • The medium of the exam is Hindi/ English.
  • The exam has questions from the following topics:
  • English
  • Elementary maths
  • General knowledge

  • The marking exam is as follows:
  • Incorrect answer: 1/3rd marks deducted for every wrong answer.
