Patent Agent Exam Syllabus:

The Patent Agent exam is conducted by the Government of India to qualify professionals as practicing patent agents and help the corporate and individuals to file patents. The Patent Agent exam syllabus will come to the aid of a candidate interested in pursuing a career as a patent agent.

Eligibility criteria:

  • The interested candidate must be an Indian National.
  • The interested candidate must be at least 21 years of age.
  • The candidate must possess at least a bachelor’s degree in Science/ engineering/ technology from a recognized university.
  • Candidates appearing for final year exam are also eligible to apply for the exam.

Selection procedure:

The Patent agent exam comprises of 3 stages. These include the following:

  • Part 1: The part consists of 40 multiple choice objective questions of 1 mark each and descriptive questions of 60 marks.
  • Part 2:  The part consists of 2 questions of 30 marks each on the following:
  • Drafting of specification from given claims and background.
  • Drafting of claims from given specification and the other questions will be descriptive/interpretative type questions of 40 marks.
  • Part 3: The part consists of an interview/ Viva voce based on domain knowledge.

There is no specific laid out syllabus for the patent agent exam. The candidate is expected to be thorough with all the Patent office practices and procedures.

  • Bare acts of the Patent Acts and Rules, 1970
  • The Indian Patents Act & Rules along with the manual of patent practice published by the Indian Patent Office 2008, 2011.
  • Previous year papers and practice papers.
