The National Exit Examination or NEXT is proposed to be conducted in the final year of MBBS program for all the students enrolled in the course program. The NEXT examination has been proposed under the National Commission Medical Bill. The Ministry of Health, Government of India has proposed to scrap the NEET PG exam for admission to MD/ MS programs. The Ministry has drafted the NMC with a view to assessing the knowledge and skills of the final year students of the MBBS program. The NEXT exam will serve as a licentiate examination for students to practice after the completion of the MBBS program.

According to the NMC bill, the government of India proposes that admission to all medical postgraduate courses will be done on the basis of scores achieved in the NEXT exam. The exam will be held on a national level across the country. Since its introduction, the NMC bill has seen a range of debates and updates. An important update concerns the aspirants under the Yoga, AYUSH Ayurveda, Neuropathy, Siddha, Yunani, and Homeopathy. According to the update, aspirants will not be allowed to practice modern medicine. State governments have been given the freedom to take appropriate measures to promote and address health care in rural areas.

Another important update regarding NEXT in the NMC bill is that any kind of illegal medical practice or quackery will invite a fine of up to 5 lakhs and a jail term of up to 5 years. This has been a major feature of the bill as it aims to eradicate illegal practices and promote quality health care.

NEXT aims to replace the numerous MBBS exams conducted by various colleges and universities to grants admission to postgraduate courses after the completion of MBBS. The exam is likely to be on the multiple-choice question format. The NEXT exam pattern is yet to be finalized and is in its nascent stage.
