The results of the survey that ranks cleanest cities of India, which is also called Swachh Suvekshan has come for the year 2019. The union ministry of housing and urban affairs (MoHUA) has been working and conducting the surveys to create some competitive spirit among the cities of our nation to excel in the categories of cleanliness and sanitation. However, the Swachh Survekshan this year started in January 2019 and went on for a month to survey and observe the 4237 urban local bodies for their cleanliness and innovative efforts taken to improve sanitation. The results were released on Wednesday in New Delhi by the President Ram Nath Kovind and Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs, Hardeep Singh Puri. Cities that scored the top three spots are Indore in Madhya Pradesh, Ambikapur in Chandigarh, and Mysuru in Karnataka respectively. Unfortunately, none of the Tamil Nadu cities has appeared in the top 10 cleanest cities of India. Trichy, a city in Tamil Nadu which was on the 13th number in Swachh Survekshan last year dropped down to 39th spot this year. Also, another city of Tamil Nadu, which was on the 16th spot in the survey of the previous year has slumped to 40th spot. Trichy and Coimbatore are the only two Tamil Nadu cities on the top 50 list while Chennai is ranked 61st.
As we all can observe that Indore has bagged the first spot on the list of the cleanest city in India for the consecutive third year now. Whereas, New Delhi has been declared as the cleanest in the small city category. While its Cantonment has been declared as India’s Cleanest Cantonment. Ujjain is now India’s cleanest in medium city category with a population of 3-10 lakh.
Mr. Puri also announced that since 2014, the government has built around over 9.2 crore toilets across the country, resulting in the jump of basic sanitation coverage from 38.7 percent to close to 99 percent in February 2019.
