HCS Exam Pattern:

The Haryana Civil Services (HCS) examination is conducted by the Haryana Public Service Commission (HPSC). The HCS exam is conducted to recruit the most eligible candidates to various state administrative posts. The HCS officers are next only to the IAS cadre of officers. The HCS exam pattern will help candidates desirous of becoming state civil servants.

Last date to submit completed application: April 2020

Date of HCS preliminary exam: May 2020

Date of HCS main exam: September 2020

Application fee:

  • General Male candidates: 1000/-
  • General Female candidates: 250/-
  • SC/ BC-A/ BC-B/ ESM Male and Female candidates: 250/-
  • PwD: No application fee will be levied.

Selection procedure:

The HCS exam is modelled after the Civil Services examination conducted by UPSC. The exam consists of 3 stages. These are as follows:

  • Preliminary exam
  • Main exam
  • Personality test/ interview

Preliminary HCS exam pattern:

  • The exam is a pen and paper based examination.
  • The candidates are provided with an OMR sheet to answer the questions asked.
  • The exam consists of multiple choice objective questions.
  • The exam consists of 2 papers, i.e., General studies and CSAT.
  • The total number of questions asked are 100 each.
  • The total weightage of the exam is 100 marks each.
  • The duration of the exam is 2 hours/ 120 minutes each.
  • The marking scheme is as follows:
  • Correct answer: + 1 mark
  • Incorrect answer: – 0.25 marks will be deducted
  • The medium of the exam is English/ Hindi.

Main HCS Exam pattern:

  • The exam is a pen and paper based offline examination.
  • The exam consists of descriptive and subjective essay type questions.
  • The exam consists of 5 papers which include the following:
  • English
  • Hindi
  • General studies
  • Optional subject 1
  • Optional subject 2
  • The duration of the exam is 3 hours/ 180 minutes each.
  • The total weightage of the exam is 600 marks.
