GATE Exam Pattern 2020:

The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering or GATE as it is popularly referred to will be conducted by IIT Delhi for admission to the various postgraduate programs like M.E / M.Tech / M.Arch / Ph.D. courses. The GATE exam pattern 2020 has been released by IIT Delhi. The exam pattern gives a brief about the type of questions that will be asked in the exam, the marking scheme and others to help the candidates prepare well.

Here are the details of the GATE exam pattern 2020:

GATE is a national level exam that is conducted annually by IIT Delhi.

Start of registration for application: 3rd September 2019

Last date to submit completed application: 5th October 2019

Release of mock test: 9th November 2019

Release of admit card: 3rd January 2020

Date of GATE Exam: 1st, 2nd, 8th and 9th February 2020

Date of declaration of result: 16th March 2020

GATE exam has 25 papers and barring the general aptitude paper, the syllabus for each paper is different from the other. Candidate must choose any one paper out of these to appear for GATE.

GATE Exam pattern:

  • The GATE exam is a computer based online exam.
  • The exam comprises of questions that are multiple choice objective types and numerical answer type.
  • The total number of questions asked in 65.
  • The duration of the exam is 3 hours/ 180 minutes.
  • The maximum marks for the GATE exam is 100 marks.
  • The marking scheme is as follows: 

MCQ’s have negative marking only.

  • Correct answer: +1 and +2 marks.
  • Incorrect answers for 1 mark questions: 1/3rd marks will be deducted.
  • Incorrect answers for 2 mark questions: 2/3rd marks will be deducted.

NAT does not have any negative marking.

  • Correct answer: +1 and +2 marks.  
  • The exam has two sections, these include the following:
  • General aptitude
  • Choice of engineering branch
  • Medium of the exam is English.
  • The number of questions asked is as follows:
  • General Aptitude (GA) – 10 questions (5 of 1 mark & 5 for 2 marks)
  • Paper excluding GG, XE, XL – 55 questions (25 of 1 mark & 30 of 2 marks)
  • Geology & Geophysics (GG) – 55 questions (25 of 1 mark & 30 of 2 marks)
  • Engineering Sciences (XE) – 11 questions (7 of 1 mark & 4 of 2 marks)/ optional subject – 22 questions of 35 marks (9 of 1 mark & 13 of 2 marks)
  • Life Sciences (XL) – 15 questions (5 of 1 mark & 10 of 2 marks)/ optional subject – 20 questions of 30 marks (10 questions of 1 mark & 10 questions of 2 marks)
  • Each subject has been assigned a specific subject code.

CE, CS, EC, EE, IN, ME, AE, AG, BT, CH, MN, MT, TF, XE, PE, ST and PI General Aptitude (GA) – 15% Engineering Mathematics – 15% Subject of the Paper –  70%
AR, CY, EY, XL, GG, MA and PH General Aptitude (GA) – 15% Subject of the Paper – 85%
