ESE Exam Pattern:

The Engineering Services Exam (ESE) is a combined examination conducted by the Union Public Services Commission (UPSC). The ESE is conducted to recruit engineers into the various sectors of the Government of India. these include various Public sector undertakings like Indian Railways, Power, Telecommunications, Central Water engineering, Defense service of Engineers, Central Engineering Service and others. The ESE exam pattern helps candidates to prepare well for the exam.

Here are the details of the ESE exam pattern:

Eligibility criteria:

  • The candidate must be a citizen of India.
  • The candidate must be at least 21 years of age and not have exceeded 30 years as on 1st January 2019.
  • The candidate must be born between 2nd January 1989 and 1st January 1998.
  • Age relaxation rules are as per the guidelines laid down by the Government of India.
  • The candidate must possess a degree in engineering from a recognized University.

ESE exam pattern:

The ESE exam comprises of 3 stages. These include the following:

  • Preliminary Exam
  • Main exam
  • Personality test

Preliminary exam:

  • The prelims consist of 2 papers which includes the following:
  • Paper 1 is General studies and engineering aptitude which is common for all.
  • Paper 2 is the opted engineering discipline of the candidate which includes Civil/ Mechanical/ Electrical/ Electronics and telecommunication engineering.
  • The preliminary exam consists of multiple choice objective questions.
  • The medium of the exam is English only.
  • The total weightage of the exam is 500 marks.
  • The duration of the exam is 5 hours.
  • The candidates are provided with an OMR sheet and a rough sheet for answering the 2 papers.
  • The marking scheme includes negative marking.
  • Incorrect answer: – 1/3rd mark is deducted.

Main exam:

  • The exam is an offline pen and paper based examination.
  • The exam consists of 2 papers that are subject based.
  • Candidates will answer questions from the chosen engineering discipline.
  • A total of 8 questions will be asked out of which candidates have to attempt 5.
  • The medium of the exam is English only.
  • The marking scheme does not have any negative marking, though -5 marks may be deducted for illegible handwriting.
