In layman terms, Marine Biology is the study of life in the ocean. The earth is 2/3rd water covered by oceans, lakes, ponds, rivers and other such masses that surround the land. The water holds an entire ecosystem within itself which is completely different from that of the land. The five big oceans that surround the land includes the Pacific, Atlantic, Arctic, Indian and the southern cover 70% of the Earth’s surface. The oceans are teeming with life and the study of these life forms is known as Marine Biology. It is the study of marine organisms, their behaviors, and interactions with the environment. It includes various areas of specialization which can be based on a particular species, group, behavior, technique, or ecosystem.

Marine Biology is a wide field and encompasses the study of all marine organisms from planktons to whales. Marine biology includes the study of fields like systematics, ecology, anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pathology, parasitology, reproduction, and development, Mariculture, ocean farming, pollution biology, energy resources and conservation. The eligibility to pursue a graduation course is 10+2 with science stream. To be eligible for pursuing a master’s course in Marine Biology, the candidate should have completed his B.Sc. (Hons) in Aquaculture or B.Sc. (Hons) in Biological Sciences or B.Sc. (Hons) in Life Sciences for 3 years. After completion of a master’s the candidate can apply for a Ph.D. for 3-5 years duration. A Marine Biologist has innumerable job opportunities like working as Fisheries Biologist, Aqua culturist, Natural Resource Manager, Environmental Consultant, Researcher, and Teaching. The role of a Marine Biologist has become extremely important in recent times with changes in climate all over the world and the rising temperatures and water levels.
